"deeply skilled songwriting performed with an effortless swagger"
Charlie Burg makes the kind of music I wish I could make. Incredibly narrative and dynamic, almost as if each track was a short form musical. I’ve picked “Chicago (Take It Or Leave It)” to write about, perhaps as I think it has the widest appeal, but the truth is, every one of Charlie Burg’s 2022 releases have been special and frankly, different from anything else out there. Take a moment to appreciate the supreme musical talent here.
I think a big reason I am drawn to Charlie Burg’s music is the evolution each track undergoes. I really think the comparison to a short form musical is apt, if you listen a couple times, you will hear the truly distinct acts. This is quite a tricky thing to accomplish, you have to develop and visualize an entire track at once, rather than focus on the usual verse, chorus, etc. structure. There’s a fine balance between maintaining a consistent sound while avoiding an over reliance on motifs.
The guitar work is clearly skilled and diverse, but that takes nothing away from excellent bass and drums performances. It’s like listening to a jam session where everything just goes perfectly right. I’d love to get an insight into how Charlie Burg makes music.
The vocal performance, especially the always enjoyable ad libs and well constructed and performed background choral vocals are a staple part of what (in my mind) makes Charlie Burg track. The lyrics are narrative, and as stories are best left unspoiled, take a listen and enjoy it for yourself!
I enjoy the accompanying artwork for this track, it’s simple, but well composed, especially with the blocked solid colors. Like the track, it is richly textured with distinct sections that combine and flow well.
