"a coming of age expressed in a glorious guitar solo"

I was fortunate enough to come across this track in a youtube playlist, and it is quite unforgettable.

Lyrically, I am very much reminded of Mac Demarco’s classic “Freaking Out The Neighborhood”, and the themes certainly overlap. Hala of course offers a fresh take, but there is a calm frenzy in the feelings of coming of age, perhaps in the acceptance of uncertainty, that comes across in both tracks.

It’s unfair to reduce the significant effort that goes into crafting a piece of music like this, but to me, the guitar solo is the defining feature of the song. It feels like an expulsion of angst and a melodic depiction of coming of age. The first half of the track builds towards it, while the second half comes down from it.

The accompanying art is cool, it’s nice to see the artist, and the windbreaker is certainly album cover worthy. If it gives you a good vibe, check out the Sorry music video which accompanies the track well and features Hala and his windbreaker.

My advice? Close your eyes, wait until 1:27, and let yourself sink into the track.
